Not too long ago Kathrin and I were invited to visit friends at their recently acquired seminar house in Northeastern Switzerland. This was a particularly exciting time for me, as I have been invited to display prints of my photographs in the many bedrooms of the house. There is also the possibility of some sales, which is something completely new for me and I will try to use this opportunity to learn as much as I can about the commercial side of photography. Printing, mounting and framing of the first few images will definitely be a bit of an adventure and could result in an exciting blog post somewhat further down the track.
The main purpose of the visit, aside from catching up with our friends of course, was for me to be able to view the rooms of the house firsthand, so that I could make some initial decisions about which images were appropriate, together with potential colours and styles of the mats and frames. I also made sure to pack my camera, however, and was able to find a good few hours for some landscape photography in the evening and early the following morning. Of course, the entire region is naturally beautiful, but there was one famous location we heard about even before arriving at the seminar house – the Thur Waterfalls. In fact, the waterfalls were mentioned so often that I knew that I’d have to pay them a visit even if just to see what all the fuss was about. It is, as I soon discovered, a beautiful location complete with a viewing area above the waterfall and a platform that extends underneath the cliff opposite. It was this latter vantage point that I chose to use, as it allowed sight to both waterfalls and presented me with the opportunity to use the roof of the cave as an abstract frame around the main subject. I originally composed the images in black and white, but due to my recent colour bent I instead decided to present them here in colour, with a single monochrome conversion for fun.
All-in-all it was a very enjoyable short visit that provided both a welcome escape from everyday life and inspiration for my photography.
Es ist nicht so lange her, dass Kathrin und ich zu einem von Freunden neulich gekauften Seminarhaus eingeladen wurden. Es war eine besonders aufregende Zeit für mich, weil Sie mich gefragt haben, ob ich einige Fotografien in den Schlafzimmern ausstellen und vielleicht noch verkaufen möchte. Die ‘Verkaufs Seite’ der Fotografie ist etwas komplett Neues für mich und ich werde mein Bestes geben, um so viel über die Vermarktung meiner Fotos in der nächsten Zeit zu lernen. Das Drucken, die Montierung und Einrahmung der ersten Bilder werden auf jeden Fall spannend sein und könnte für einen zukünftigen Blogeintrag für Spannung sorgen.
Der Hauptgrund unseres Besuches, ausserhalb natürlich unsere Freunde wieder zu sehen, war für mich die Schlafzimmer mit eigenen Augen anzuschauen und erste Entscheidungen über Motive, sowohl Farben und Stile von Passepartouts und Rahmen zu treffen. Selbstverständlich habe ich aber auch meine Fotoausrüstung mit gebracht und habe ein paar Stunden am Abend und dem darauf folgenden Morgen zum Fotografieren gefunden. Gewiss ist die ganze Gegend wunderschön und bietet viel für einen Landschaftsfotograf, aber es gab einen Ort, von dem wir schon im Voraus vieles gehört haben – die Thurwasserfälle. Eigentlich haben wir so oft Empfehlungen für einen Besuch der Fälle bekommen, dass ich hin musste, wenn auch nur zu sehen, warum so oft darüber gesprochen wurde. Die Fälle und das ganze Tal rundherum sind auf jeden Fall sehr schön und es gibt sowohl einen Aussichtsbereich oberhalb der Fälle, als noch eine Plattform an/unter dem Gestein gegenüber von den Fällen. Es war dieser letzte Aussichtspunkt, den ich für meine Fotos ausgewählt habe, denn ich wollte beide Wasserfälle gleichzeitig im Bild haben. Das Dach der ‘Höhle’ sollte als abstrakter Rahmen der Fälle zu eingesetzt werden. Ich habe die Bilder beim Fotografieren in Schwarz-Weiss konzipiert, aber wegen meiner aktuellen Sucht nach Farben, habe ich Sie hier in Farbe präsentiert, mit nur einer monochromen Konversion zum Spass.
Alles in allem war sie eine sehr angenehme, kurze Reise, die mich beide eine Auszeit vom tagtäglichen Leben und Inspiration für meine Fotografie schenkte.
