Lily study #1

Over the course of a couple of nights this week I spent time studying the photographic opportunities afforded by a bouquet of lilies. Rather than simply try to accurately capture the beauty of the flowers, I was more interested in using directed light to enhance the existing forms and textures. Even though these particular lilies are characterised by muted colours, I enjoy the freedom of expression that comes with working in black and white. Also, rather than simply photographing the lilies in their prime, I relish portraying them as they fade.

Diese Woche habe ich ein paar Abende mit der fotografischen Studie eines Lilien Strausses verbracht. Anstatt nur die Schönheit dieser Blumen einzufangen, wollte ich die Formen und Texturen mit der Hilfe eines Blitzlichtes betonen. Auch wenn diese Lilien nur gedämpfte Farben zeigen, fotografiere ich sie lieber auf Schwarz-Weiss, da es einen grösseren Spielraum in der Darstellung der Blumen ergibt. Ich finde es auch spannend die Blumen nicht nur in voller Blüte abzubilden, sondern auch wenn sie verwelken und ganz andere Formen und Texturen annehmen.
