Letting it go

Instead of fighting holiday crowds and waves of pilgrims over Easter, Kathrin and I decided to travel down to Locarno a few days early and beat the rush. The weather decided to reward us as well and barring a few cloudy periods, we enjoyed nothing but sunshine the entire trip. Locarno is one of the larger towns in the Canton of Ticino and a place of pilgrimage, with the most popular attraction being the Madonna del Sasso. With a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, city and Lake Maggiore, we knew that we would also be paying it a visit. We ended up spending a few hours in the surrounding area on our first full day in Locarno, marvelling at the amazing scenery and also dropped past on the second day during our hike up to Cardada. From Orselina above Locarno we were constantly treated to amazing views of the mountains. I challenged myself to find interesting ways of framing the peaks with foreground elements:

The local climate also presented us with some surprises. On the hike up to Cardada we were stuck by how dry the forest was; it had clearly not rained there in quite some time. We were shocked a second time when we arrived at Cardada and found a good 30 cm covering of snow and much lower temperatures. Our descent took us through a ravine and subsequent park, which were much lusher than the hillside and reminded me of a scene out of Jurassic Park:

I did most of my landscape photography in the morning around sunrise, but I did do a bit of scouting around the lake one evening armed my a tiny table-top tripod:

For the last day of the trip we decided to head to Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino and explore the old fortifications. Here is a small selection of photos from our midday walkabouts:

Overall it was a highly enjoyable trip and we are definitely looking forward to our next visit to Ticino!

Anstatt uns durch die Menschenmassen von Urlaubern und Wallfahrern während Ostern zu kämpfen, haben Kathrin und ich uns entschieden, Locarno in der Woche davor zu besuchen. Das Wetter hat uns dafür belohnt und ausser einigen bewölkten Stunden, hatten wir fast immer Sonnenschein und warme Temperaturen. Locarno ist eine Stadt im Kanton Tessin und ein Wallfahrtsort. Oben auf der Liste von Sehenswürdigkeiten in Locarno ist die Madonna del Sasso, ein Sanktuarium in Orselina oberhalb der Stadt. Mit wunderschönem Blick auf die Berge, die Stadt und den Lago Maggiore, wussten wir schon im Voraus, dass wir hier anhalten würden. Wir haben am ersten vollen Tag einige Stunden dort und in Orselina verbracht und waren die ganze Zeit von der wunderschönen Aussicht erstaunt. Wir haben auch am zweiten Tag auf der Wanderung nach Cardada angehalten und mehrere Bilder gemacht. Hier sind ein paar davon:

Von Orselina oberhalb Locarnos hatten wir sehr eine sehr schöne Aussicht. Ich habe mich herausgefordert gefühlt, einen interessanten Rahmen für die Gipfel zu finden:

Das lokale Klima hielt auch Überraschungen für uns bereit. Auf der Wanderung nach Cardada waren wir mit der Trockenheit des Waldes überrascht, es hat bestimmt eine lange Zeit kein Regen gegeben. Oben bei Cardada wartete die nächste Überraschung auf uns – 30 cm Schnee und deutlich kühle Temperaturen. Der Abstieg führte uns durch eine Schlucht und einen anschliessenden Park, in dem das Klima deutlich feuchter war. Einige Teile davon hat mich an Szenen aus Jurassic Park erinnert:

Ich habe fast alle meine Landschaftsbilder beim Sonnenaufgang am See gemacht, aber an einem Abend habe ich mit Hilfe eines kleinen Stativs auch einige Nachtaufnahmen probiert:

Am letzten Tag unserer Reise sind wir nach Bellinzona, die Hauptstadt von Tessin, gereist und haben die alten Burgen angeschaut. Hier ist eine kleine Auswahl an Bilder von unserem Spaziergang:

Es war auf jeden Fall eine sehr angenehme Reise und wir freuen uns auf unseren nächsten Aufenthalt in Tessin!
