I’ve decided to take a bit of a different tack this week instead of posting more street or beach photos. I came up with the idea for this series after walking through all of the detritus from the last storm. Instead of simply photographing the gum nuts, seedpods and flowers where they lay, I decided to collect some and bring them back home to photograph under strongly directional lighting. But what do you do when you don’t have access to any studio gear? Improvise, of course! My ‘studio’ set up consisted of a CD wallet for the black background, a desk lamp as the main light and I used a CD as a reflector for some fill light. I don’t have a macro lens with me, so I had to crop these images quite severely from the original photos. Let me know how you think I went.
Man improvisiert! Was meint ihr? Findet ihr die Fotos interessant?
Dramatic indeed! These are exquisite Brad. The gothic (and Australian) version of Joshua White’s “A Photographic Survey of the American Yard” (https://www.joshuawhitephotography.com/a-photographic-survey-of-the-american-yard/).

Thanks Kim! I remember you showing me these in a NatGeo that I borrowed off you. 🙂
For me it was just as much an exercise in lighting and making do with what I had to hand as it was about the native flora. My only regret is that I don’t have a lens with close focusing capabilities with me 😦

Thank you very much Lena!
I enjoyed wandering around collecting the various seedpods and flowers as much as I did photographing them. 🙂
